Freefly - Toys & Games

Freefly was born for most of us in the mid-90's; for a few it’s now an old discipline, for a lot it’s brand new.   To define Freefly is difficult since its possibilities are so many, varied and endless; we hope that it will stay this way.   However, we can say that Freefly is a means wherein the interest is multiple; it allows for total freedom of movement and becomes a communication tool for the flyers among themselves.   There exists also the possibility to be creative, for the flyers to create their own style and to realise their own ideas and concepts of human flight.   Mostly it gives us an immediate and immense sensation of pleasure and shared experience.

There is no, one, basic position for Freefly, but there is a goal to achieve unlimited, dynamic movements and positions in the air, controlling all rates of speed and all trajectories, exploring real three dimensional flight.   Freefly is beautiful, with the attitudes taken by the flyer-performers, interactive choreography can often look like a dance piece of a new kind!   Flyers moving within a space that is undefined, un-contained; using the speed and force of flight and playing with the energy of the relative wind to create beautiful movement, interacting with one another to form an expressive communicative dance.

To add to the beauty of human flight BaByLoN like to use flying objects such as sky balls, to play with levels and use as a focus point for us to adjust our flying towards.   This can be good for sharpening our awareness in flight and for creating games and fun.   It is both a tool and a toy, allowing us to perfect and solidify the skills we need to use this energy and also to present almost a form of physical theatre, playing with space and spatial awareness.

The most important element for BaByLoN toys and games, is its flying tubes...   Those, now well known, fabric structures of large dimensions inspired by the artist "plastician" Hans Walter Muler, designed and created at BaByLoN by Sylvain Turina, are used to decorate the sky with their different volumes and colours.   They create new and bigger visual references for the flyers reacting with and around them.   Flying with the tubes is an intense experience, heightening the awareness and senses, requiring a keen instinctive sense of Freefly and a deeper interaction with each other.   There is a relationship with them; they are part of the group and the focus of our flight.   Their movement is captivating and so extremely different to ours, unpredictable and powerful.   The tubes give us a feeling of flying with another energy, an alien-like presence within our midst.
